Fibromyalgia: ways to alleviate and improve quality of life
What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome characterized by widespread chronic pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances and increased sensitivity to touch. Many patients also experience cognitive problems ("fibro-fog") and increased sensitivity to stress. The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood, but it is thought that a malfunction in the pain processing of the central nervous system plays a role .
Treatment options for fibromyalgia
The treatment of fibromyalgia requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes both drug and non-drug approaches:
1. drug therapy
-Painkillers such as NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen) or tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline can help to relieve pain.
-Antidepressants such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) and pregabalin (Lyrica), which are approved for fibromyalgia, work by reducing pain signals in the brain.
2. physiotherapy and exercise
Although exercise can be difficult for many sufferers at first, regular physical activity has been shown to relieve pain and improve mobility. Recommended exercises include:
-Gentle aerobic exercises such as swimming or cycling.
-Yoga and stretching to stretch the muscles and relieve tension.
3. cold therapy (whole-body cryotherapy)
A newer, promising treatment method is whole-body cryotherapy, in which the body is exposed to extremely low temperatures for a short period of time. Studies show that this therapy can significantly reduce the intensity of pain and modulate inflammatory processes in the body.
4. psychotherapy
Emotional burdens such as stress, depression and anxiety often exacerbate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a proven method for improving the management of chronic pain and increasing general well-being.
Lifestyle changes for a better quality of life
In addition to medical treatments, certain lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on relieving fibromyalgia symptoms:
-Healthydiet: Although there is no specific diet for fibromyalgia, a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit and healthy fats can help to improve overall health.
-Stress management: Relaxation techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation can help to reduce stress and thus alleviate symptoms.
