Digestive disorders: Causes and ways to alleviate
What are digestive disorders?
Digestive disorders include a variety of problems that affect the gastrointestinal tract. The most common symptoms include:
-abdominal pain
-Flatulence
-constipation or diarrhea
-Heartburn and reflux
Digestive disorders can be both short-term and chronic and can be triggered by a variety of factors, including dietary habits, stress, infections or structural problems in the digestive system .
Common causes of indigestion
1. irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common functional digestive disorders and leads to recurring abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea or constipation. The exact cause is unclear, but factors such as disturbed bowel movements, hypersensitive nerves and stress play a role.
2. heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Heartburn and GERD occur when stomach acid rises into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest and digestive discomfort. This is often exacerbated by poor diet, smoking or obesity.
3. stomach ulcers
Stomach ulcers occur when the mucous membrane of the stomach or duodenum is damaged by stomach acid. An infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori or excessive use of painkillers such as ibuprofen can cause this.
Treatment options
1. change in diet
A healthy, high-fiber diet can help to alleviate the symptoms of indigestion. Certain foods that are known to trigger symptoms (e.g. high-fat or spicy foods) should be avoided. Probiotics also help to support the intestinal flora .
2. stress management
Stress is a significant factor in digestive problems, especially irritable bowel syndrome. Relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation and regular exercise can help to alleviate symptoms.
3. drug therapy
Depending on the specific cause, medications such as proton pump inhibitors (for GERD), antibiotics (for H. pylori infections) or antispasmodics (for IBS) may be prescribed to relieve symptoms.
