Intolerances: Histamine, lactose, fructose and gluten - what's behind them and how can they be managed?

What are intolerances?

Food intolerances occur when the body is unable to break down or process certain food components properly. This leads to a variety of symptoms, which can range from mild stomach complaints to severe reactions. The most common intolerances are

1. histamine intolerance

With histamine intolerance, the body is unable to properly break down the histamine found in many foods, which can lead to symptoms such as headaches, reddening of the skin, gastrointestinal problems and palpitations. This is often due to a lack of diamine oxidase (DAO), the enzyme that breaks down histamine. Foods rich in histamine such as matured cheese, wine and certain types of fish are particularly problematic.

2. lactose intolerance

People with lactose intolerance cannot digest the milk sugar lactose properly as they lack the enzyme lactase. This leads to flatulence, diarrhea and abdominal cramps after consuming dairy products.

3. fructose malabsorption

Fructose intolerance occurs when the small intestine is unable to absorb fruit sugar (fructose) properly. This causes similar symptoms to lactose intolerance, including bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In severe cases, hereditary fructose intolerance may be present, which is genetic and present from birth .

4. non-celiac gluten intolerance

People with non-celiac gluten intolerance experience symptoms after eating gluten, but without the autoimmune reaction of celiac disease. Symptoms include fatigue, headaches and gastrointestinal discomfort, which improve with the elimination of gluten-containing foods.

Tips for coping with intolerances

1st elimination diet

Identifying problematic foods by gradually eliminating and reintroducing them is often the first step in recognizing and managing intolerances.

2. enzyme preparations

In the case of lactose or histamine intolerance, enzyme preparations can help to alleviate the symptoms by replacing the missing enzymes.
